By OGJ editors HOUSTON, Aug. 9 -- Petrojam Ltd., Jamaica's national oil company, obtained a trademarked diesel Unionfining unit from UOP LLC, a Honeywell company based in Des Plaines, Ill. The transaction represented the first sale resulting from the hydroprocessing alliance recently formed by UOP with Albemarle Corp., Baton Rouge, La., to produce cleaner fuels.
The unit, which uses a catalytic process for desulfurization of cracked and straight-run distillate materials, is part of a clean fuels refinery upgrade at the government-owned refiner that will allow Jamaica to be more self-sufficient and reduce transportation fuel imports. The unit design is based on a catalyst that has been commercially applied for producing ultralow-sulfur diesel.
Petrojam also is installing technology to reform naphtha to produce aromatics for petrochemical complexes, high-octane gasoline, and hydrogen.
