Baker Hughes: In double-digit drop, US rig count falls below 1,000 units to 991
The US drilling rig count dropped 21 units, falling below 1,000 to 991 rigs working for the week ended Apr. 26, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is down 30 units from the 1,021 rigs working this time a year ago.
The number of rigs drilling on land fell 20 units week-over-week to a total of 966 rigs running. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was up by a single unit to reach 4 rigs units working for the week. The number of rigs drilling offshore dropped by 2 units to 21.
US oil-directed rigs decreased by 20 from last week to 805 units. A year ago, 825 units were drilling for oil. Gas-directed rigs fell by a single unit to 186 rigs, 9 fewer than were drilling for gas a year ago.
Among the major oil and gas-producing states, only Colorado, with a single-unit gain to 32, saw an increase in rigs week-over-week.
Five states remained unchanged this week, namely Oklahoma, 102; West Virginia, 21; Ohio, 15; Utah, 7; and Arkansas, 0.
With a 9-unit decrease, Texas saw its weekly count fall to 491.
North Dakota’s rig count fell by 3 units to reach 58. Wyoming saw a 2-rig drop to reach 32 rigs running for the week.
Six states saw a single-unit decrease, namely New Mexico, 104; Louisiana, 62; Pennsylvania, 43; California, 12; Alaska, 6; and Kansas, 0.
Canada’s rig count decreased by 3 units for the week. At 63 rigs, the count is 22 fewer than the 85 units drilling this week a year ago. With 19 rigs drilling, Canada’s oil-directed rigs remained unchanged for the week. Gas-directed rigs in Canada decreased by 3 units to reach 44.
