PARIS, Mar. 21 -- In line with general demonstrations and strikes taking place in France Mar. 20 protesting deteriorating economic and employment conditions, all of Total's refining and petrochemicals-industrial sites were affected by sporadic strikes. Total's spokesman indicated that their impact on both production and operations was "very limited."

The striking at Gonfreville refinery in Normandy began yesterday ahead of the Mar. 20 demonstrations. The workers, according to the CGT Trade Union, fear that Total will shut down its refineries in France, preferring to invest in refineries and petrochemical facilities such as Jubail and Algeria abroad.

Total's spokesman strongly denied any such plans, saying Total would be investing nearly €1 billion in its refineries in France.
