KARACHI, May 26 --
A memorandum of understanding on energy cooperation was signed last week by Asim Hussain, advisor on petroleum and natural resources to Pakistan’s Prime Minister; and Sergei Shnatro, Russia’s energy minister.

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev witnessed the signing on Zardari’s 4-day visit to Russia.

The MOU would encourage development of Pakistan’s oil and gas fields, development of oil and gas storage in Pakistan, and improvement of Pakistan’s infrastructure to use gas as a motor fuel. OAO Stroytransgaz, a Russian firm, expressed interest in building transnational gas pipeline projects in Pakistan from Turkmenistan, Iran, or Qatar.

Similarly, Gazprom Geoservice Petroleum Co. agreed to construct oil and gas storage facilities and help train Pakistani workers.
