ARKLA CHALKS UP ANOTHER MISSLA DISCOVERY

Arkla Exploration Co. has tested another field discovery in Southwest Mississippi. It marks the 13th new field discovery completed by Arkla in Southwest Mississippi and East Central Louisiana, known as the MissLa region, since the company began an exploration program there about 3 years ago. It also is the company's fourth key MissLa discovery this year. Southern Mississippi also is the scene of an Oligocene Frio gas play (OGJ, Aug. 27, p. 53).

Arkla's 1-27 P.J. Smith Heirs wildcat, drilled to 12,326 ft on the Longleaf prospect in Wilkinson County, Miss., flowed 1.16 MMcfd of gas and 120 b/d of condensate through a 9/64 in. choke with 2,890 psi flowing tubing pressure from Lower Tuscaloosa perforations at 11,886-896 ft.

Arkla expects to begin confirmation drilling after the first of the year. The company holds a 100% working interest in the well and about 2,000 acres in the prospect.

The strike extends a trend Arkla established with three earlier Tuscaloosa discoveries, said Carl S. Quinn, Arkla Exploration chairman and chief executive officer.

The Longleaf discovery is about 3 miles northwest of the company's St. Patrick field discovery, 7 miles northwest of Thanksgiving field, and 11 miles northwest of the company's Berwick field. All are producing from the Lower Tuscaloosa sand.

Arkla has drilled six successful wells in St. Patrick field, discovered last March. The seventh well is drilling, and more wells are planned.

Development of Berwick field has resulted in four successful wells, and more locations are being prepared for drilling.

In all, Arkla has completed 49 successful wells in the MissLa area-24 oil wells and 25 gas wells-since entering the region late in 1987.
