Nuggets subsea plans start to pan out
TotalFinaElf has awarded the EPIC subsea facilities and pipelines contract for Phases 1 and 3 of its Nuggets gas development in the northern North Sea to a consortium of Coflexip Stena Offshore and ABB Offshore Systems. CSOL will handle design, procurement, and fabrication of the four pipelines for Nuggets, as well as perform all offshore installation and tie-ins of the pipelines, umbilicals, and manifolds. ABB is to provide horizontal trees, controls systems, umbilicals, and manifolds.
LONDONEuropean energy giant TotalFinaElf SA yesterday awarded the engineering, procurement, installation, and construction (EPIC) subsea facilities and pipelines contract for Phases 1 and 3 of its Nuggets gas development in the northern North Sea to a consortium of Coflexip Stena Offshore Ltd. and ABB Offshore Systems Ltd.
CSOL will handle design, procurement, and fabrication of the four pipelines ranging in diameter from 2 in. to 12 in. for Nuggets, as well as perform all offshore installation and tie-ins of the pipelines, umbilicals, and manifolds. ABB is to provide horizontal trees, controls systems, and umbilicalssupplied by Ducoplus manifolds.
The scope of work for Phase 1 of Nuggets, tapping one of four gas accumulations between Alwyn North and Frigg, will involve a new subsea manifold at the development tied back via a 12-in. pipeline piggybacked by a 3-in. utility line to the operators Alwyn North platform 40 km away. To this manifold, two subsea production wellsone adjacent to the manifold and one 3 km offwill be connected by one 6-in. and one 2-in. pipeline. A 20 km multiplexed electrohydraulic umbilical from the nearby Dunbar field will supply power, hydraulics, communications, and chemical injection to the manifold and the two wells.
Nuggets Phase 3 will see a second manifold with adjacent well, umbilical, and 12-in. pipeline piggybacked by a 4-in. utility line tied back to the Phase 1 manifold.
Present Phase 2 plans for the development have an additional production well tied back 4.4 km to the Phase 3 manifold via a 6-in. pipeline piggybacked by a 2-in. utility line and umbilical.
Installation work will start next summer with CSO sending out the CSO Apache reelship and the newly converted CSO Constructor, with the Normand Pioneer providing trenching support. ABBs COPS'comms' on powercontrol system and umbilical will be installed during the initial development phase at Nuggets to support the full field development and expansions.
First gas from Nuggets, which is in 110-125 m of water, is expected in mid-October 2001.
A topsides production facilities contract was awarded to Brown & Root as part of a 2-year overall engineering and construction deal secured in January. The development of additional reserves in the Alwyn North area became feasible only after the operators successful debottlenecking of the platforms gas plant last year boosted process capacity.
Meanwhile, in the Dutch sector of the North Sea, TotalFinaElf today added a new satellite platform, K4BE, to Block K4A. First gas from this development, according to the operator, is planned for yearend from an exploration well drilled earlier, with production rising to average 1.5 million cu m/day. Gas will be processed through existing TotalFinaElf facilities nearby and transported to shore via the Westgastransport pipeline.
