Denison Gas confirms major new onshore Queensland gas discovery
Key Highlights
- Denison Gas confirmed a major new discovery in Baffle Creek field in Central Queensland’s Bowen basin.
- Gas from two exploration wells is flowing to the Boyne Island aluminum smelter.
- The discovery potentially holds 566 petajoules.
Denison Gas Ltd. has confirmed a major new natural gas discovery in Baffle Creek field of the Denison Trough onshore in Central Queensland’s Bowen basin.
Denison’s most recent four‑well exploration program proved vast tight gas resources in deep sandstone reservoirs. Gas is flowing from two of these wells north of Roma and is supplying the Boyne Island aluminum smelter.
The drilling of Baffle Creek 7 has just been completed, one of Queensland’s longest tight gas horizontal wells. Fracture stimulation and testing of this well will occur in third-quarter 2026, with the gas connected to nearby pipelines for the east coast gas market.
Denison is one of the first companies to reduce emissions by connecting pilot wells to a commercial pipeline network instead of flaring.
The potential scale of the Baffle Creek discovery, initially at 566 petajoules, has prompted Denison to invest in doubling gas processing plant and condensate storage capacity in the next 12 months.
The Crisafulli Government reports that this new onshore gas discovery is also producing high-quality crude oil to supply the east coast market.
