KPO starts gas reinjection at Karachaganak field, Kazakhstan

Karachaganak Petroleum Operating aims to sustain reservoir pressure and extend the field's productive life through new infrastructure and capacity upgrades.

Key Highlights

  • KPO started first gas reinjection at Karachaganak field northwest Kazakhstan.
  • A new compressor will increase gas treatment capacity.
  • Karachaganak is one of the world’s largest gas and condensate fields.

Karachaganak Petroleum Operating BV (KPO) started first gas reinjection at the KEP-1B project at Karachaganak field in northwest Kazakhstan.

KEP1B was sanctioned in November 2022 and comprises the sixth injection compressor (6IC), gas dehydration unit, gathering network expansion, reinjection network expansion, and associated utilities.

The new compressor is expected to increase overall gas treatment capacity together with the gas reinjection volumes, maintaining reservoir pressure, and extending the field’s liquid production plateau.

Karachaganak field, discovered in 1979, is a large gas and condensate field. It covers an area of over 280 sq km and holds an estimated hydrocarbons initially in place (HIIP) of 13.6 billion bbl liquids and 59.4 tcf gas, with estimated gross reserves of over 2.4 billion bbl of condensate and 16 tcf of gas.

KPO is a joint venture of Eni SpA (29.25%), Shell plc (29.25%), Chevron (18%), Lukoil (13.5%), and KazMunayGas (10%).
