Equinor aims to connect Norwegian North Sea discovery to Åsgard
Key Highlights
- Equinor Energy's 6506/12-PB-3 H well tested the Smørbukk Midt prospect, targeting Middle Jurassic and Late Cretaceous formations.
- Hydrocarbons were found in sandstone reservoirs with moderate-to-good properties.
- Preliminary estimates place recoverable volumnes at 6.3-18.9 MMboe.
- The discovery will be connected to the Smørbukk Sør area, part of Åsgard field.
Equinor Energy AS discovered hydrocarbons in wildcat well 6506/12-PB-3 H , about 250 km southwest of Brønnøysund in the Norwegian North Sea. The operator and production license (PL) 094 partners aim to connect the discovery to Smørbukk Sør, which is part of Åsgard field.
Well 6506/12-PB-3 H, the 15th exploration well in the license, tested the Smørbukk Midt prospect between Smørbukk and Smørbukk Sør, the Norwegian Offshore Directorate said in a release Aug. 29.
The well was drilled by the Transocean Encourage drilling rig to 4,991 m MD and 4,218 m TVD subsea. It was terminated in the Ror formation in the Middle Jurassic.
The primary target was to prove petroleum in Middle Jurassic reservoir rocks in the Ile and Garn formations (the Fangst group). The secondary target was to collect data in reservoir rocks from the Late Cretaceous (the Lysing formation).
The well encountered about 54-m of a condensate-light oil column in the Garn formation in sandstone with moderate-to-good reservoir properties. The reservoir was about 94 m thick, and the petroleum-water contact was not encountered.
About 66 m of gas-condensate was also proven in the Ile formation in a sandstone reservoir with moderate-to-good reservoir properties. The reservoir was about 75 m thick, and the petroleum-water contact was not encountered. The well was not formation-tested.
Preliminary calculations place the size of the discovery at 1-3 million std cu m of recoverable oil equivalent (6.3-18.9 MMboe).
The rig will now continue drilling production well 6506/12-PB-3 AH in the Garn formation at the same location.
Equinor is operator of PL 094 (40.95%) with partners Vår Energi ASA (34.3%), Petoro AS (14.95%), and TotalEnergies EP Norge AS (9.8%).
