Vår Energi ASA confirmed a gas-condensate discovery in the Norwegian Sea Vidsyn prospect about 8 km west of Vår Energi-operated Fenja field, which is tied back to the Equinor-operated Njord field infrastructure 35 km to the northeast.
Preliminary estimates indicate that the size of the discovery is 4-6.4 million std cu m of oil equivalent (25-40 MMboe).
The licensees will assess the discovery together with prospects in the area with a view towards a potential tieback.
Wildcat well 6406/11-2 S, the eighth in in production license (PL) 586, was drilled by the Deepsea Yantai rig in 310 m of water to 3,857 m TVD subsea. It was terminated in the Åre formation from the Late Triassic.
The discovery is the third commercial discovery for Vår Energi so far this year, the company said in a release July 21.
The discovery was made on the Vidsyn ridge, which has the potential to hold up to 100 MMboe gross, the company continued. The remaining potential of the ridge will be assessed through an appraisal program, Vår Energi said.
The primary target was to prove petroleum in Lower to Middle Jurassic reservoir rocks in the Ile formation (the Fangst Group). The secondary exploration target was to prove petroleum in Lower Jurassic reservoir rocks in the Tilje and Tofte formations (the Båt Group).
The well encountered a gas-condensate column of around 110 m in the Ile formation in a sandstone reservoir with moderate to good reservoir properties. The reservoir was about 145 m thick. The petroleum-water contact was encountered 3,513 m subsea. The total column is in excess of 210 m.
In the secondary exploration targets in the Tilje and Tofte formations, aquiferous sandstones were encountered, with moderate reservoir quality.
Extensive data acquisition and sampling have been carried out and the well will be permanently plugged.
Vår Energi is operator at PL 586 (75%) with partners Sval Energi AS (17.5%) and DNO Norge AS (7.5%).
