Canacol Energy made a gas discovery in Colombia.

Drilling of exploration well Pomelo 1, in exploration and production contract VIM-21 (operator, 100%), was spudded on Feb. 19, 2024, and reached a total depth of 12,276 ft measured depth on Mar. 3, 2024.

The well encountered 96 ft of net gas depth with an average porosity of 21% within the main target of the Ciénaga de Oro reservoir (CDO, sandstone reservoir producing from Oligocene-Early Miocene).

The CDO reservoir was drilled over a 48-ft interval and connected to the existing flowline to the Betania substation in Huila.

The well started with a production rate of 4 MMscfd for 6 hours with a 21/128-in choke, the company said. Later, the well was increased to a rate of 10 MMscfd with a 30/128-in choke, and it is now producing at the Jobo gas treatment plant at a controlled rate of 8 MMscd.

The company will begin drilling the Chontaduro 1 exploration well in the first week of April. The well, sited about 3 km north of Pomelo 1, is targeting the CDO sandstone reservoir, with a secondary uphole target within the Porquero sandstone reservoir. The well is expected to take 3 weeks to complete.

For 2024, Canacol Energy plans to drill four exploration wells and plans to acquire 85-sq km of 3D seismic to add new reserves and production and identify new drilling prospects.

To optimize production and increase natural gas reserves, the company expects to drill up to five new development wells, install new compression and processing plants as needed, and workover operations of producing wells in key gas fields.
