Mobil Exploration & Producing U.S. Inc. has laid claim to an industry record oil flow at a well off Texas.
The company's High Island A-382 F-17 well, about 110 miles southeast of Galveston in 342 feet of water, flowed at a stabilized rate of 9,300 b/d and 14 MMcfd of gas through a 3/4 in. choke with 2,744 psi flowing tubing pressure. Mobil said it is the Gulf of Mexico's biggest flow from a single completion.
The well, which tested Lower Pleistocene, cut a total of 485 ft of oil and gas pay. Of that, 319 ft was a continuous oil sand, one of the thickest found in the gulf.
Mobil Exploration Pres. Charles E. Spruell said, "Through application of sophisticated new seismic technologies we gained a much better understanding of the geology of this mature producing area, which made this kind of result possible."
Mobil holds a 30% working interest in High Island Block A 382.
Its partners are Northwestern Mutual Life and Amoco Production Co. 22.2% each, Union Exploration Partners Ltd. 14.5%, and Total Minatome Corp. 11.1%.
Block A-382 is part of the six block High Island Block A 573 field, which went on stream in 1979. A total of 102 wells have been drilled in the field.
