OMV (Norge) AS made a minor hydrocarbon discovery at the Velocette 6607/3-1 S exploration well in Norwegian Sea production license 1016 (OGJ Online, Aug. 9, 2023).

While not commercial in isolation, other prospects in the license have been derisked by the presence of gas in good quality reservoir, according to a Sept. 20 release by partner Longboat Japex Norge AS.

The well encountered hydrocarbons in the primary target in Cretaceous turbidite sands in the Nise formation. The top of the reservoir was reached close to prognosis at a vertical depth of 3,348 m subsea with 61 m of high net-to-gross, moderate to very good quality sandstone. Data acquisition indicates a gas column of about 9 m in the well.

The remaining prospectivity has significant size potential in multiple structures and with slightly different trapping geometries, Longboat said.

High quality data and gas and fluid samples were collected and will be integrated into the updated prospect evaluations, Longboat said. The well will now be plugged.

PL1016 lies within tieback distance (about 45 km) from the Equinor-operated Aasta Hansteen field.

OMV Norge AS is operator of PL 1016 (40%). Partners are INPEX Idemitsu Norge AS (40%) and Longboat JAPEX Norge (20%).
