Buru Energy Ltd., Perth, discovered gas at its Rafael-1 wildcat in permit EP428 in the onshore Canning basin of northwest Western Australia about 50 km east of Ungani oil field.
Wireline logs indicate a total gross interval of 165 m of interpreted gas column from 3,785-3,950 m measured depth.
There appears to be at least 50% net dolomite reservoir section in this gas interval, the company said. The dolomite is similar to the productive dolomite reservoir at Ungani.
Buru said a gas column could be greater than that seen at this location due to high gas pressure in the reservoir and the large mapped structural closure of the prospect.
Executive Chairman Eric Streitberg said the discovery has the potential to be a material wet gas accumulation with low CO2 content in a conventional high-quality dolomite reservoir.
The company plans to run a production test by late December subject to the onset of the wet season to gather information on reservoir deliverability, reservoir fluids, pressures, and potential reservoir boundaries.
Buru is operator with 50% interest. Origin Energy Ltd. holds the remaining 50%.
