Pemex partners with Grupo Carso for Lakach development
Grupo Carso last week signed an exploration and extraction services contract with Mexico’s state oil firm Pemex for its offshore Lakach natural gas project.
Lakach, discovered in 2007, covers almost 34 sq km on the continental shelf of the southern Gulf of Mexico, 98 km southeast of Veracruz, Mexico and 50km from Alvarado. Its wells, at 900-1,200 m water depths and drilled to depths of 3,085-3,210 m below sea level, are currently plugged to be recovered.
Grupo Carso will invest more than $1.2 billion in the development, with Pemex retaining ownership of the reserves. Natural gas production will be shipped to land via pipeline, with Grupo Carso building an onshore gas treatment plant to produce sale gas and condensate.
New Fortress Energy Inc. had been Pemex’s partner in Lakach (OGJ Online, Nov. 23, 2022), but withdrew from the project last year.
