LONDON, Dec. 11 -- Natural gas was tested and proven in Tournaisian sandstones in the third completed exploration well on the Hassi Mouina license in Algeria's Sahara Desert, operator StatoilHydro AS said Dec. 11.

The Tinerkouk well (TNK–1) will provide "valuable information on the resource potential in the block," said Bill Maloney, StatoilHydro senior vice-president, global exploration. Hassi Mouina spans four blocks within a 23,000 sq km area in the Gourara basin and is in the western Sahara in Algeria, northwest of the In Salah gas field.

StatoilHydro and its partner Sonatrach are now drilling the fourth exploration well TMS 1. "Several appraisal wells will also be drilled on the earlier discoveries in order to quantify the volumes with greater certainty," Statoil said.

StatoilHydro has a 75% interest in Hassi Mouina and Sonatrach has 25%.
