LONDON, Sept. 21 -- BP Norge AS has let a $359 million engineering, procurement, and construction management assistance contract to Aker Kvaerner for Skarv oil and gas field in the Norwegian Sea. Production is slated to begin in August 2011.

Aker Kvaerner will create topsides for a 16,000-ton floating production, storage, and offloading vessel and will provide construction management assistance to BP. The contract award is subject to BP's receiving parliamentary backing for its field development plan.

BP wants to develop Skarv and nearby Idun gas field simultaneously, using the FPSO, which will lie in the Norwegian Sea 200 km west of the Norwegian city of Sandnessjoen. It will be installed between Norne field, 35 km to the north, and Heidrun, 45 km to the south, in 350-450 m of water.
