HOUSTON, May 22 -- McMoRan Exploration Co., New Orleans, reported a geological discovery at the Point Chevreuil exploratory well in St. Mary Parish.
McMoRan and its private partner acquired 2,500 gross acres around the discovery at a state lease sale. The well, in 10 ft of water in shallow-producing South Belle Isle field, is to go on production in the third quarter. Logs indicated 96 net ft of hydrocarbon-bearing sands in a 112-ft gross interval. TD is 17,011 ft.
Meanwhile, the company cemented liner and will start production from the Liberty Canal discovery well onshore in Vermilion Parish, La., in the third quarter. TD is 16,594 ft. It cut 125 net ft of hydrocarbon-bearing sands with excellent porosity.
After completion, the company plans to spud the Liberty Canal Upthrown exploratory well 2 miles to the northwest.
McMoRan started production this month from the Hurricane-2 development well on South Marsh Island Block 217. It is flowing 34 MMcfd of gas, and the operator plans to gradually increase the rate. The field's two wells total 81 MMcfd. The third well is expected to go on line before the end of June.
