HOUSTON, Aug. 24 -- Newfield Peninsula Malaysia Inc. awarded a 40 million Ringgit Malaysia (RM) contract to Oilfab Sdn. Bhd., a subsidiary of Oilcorp Bhd. investment holding company, for engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of the jacket and topsides of the Chermingat-A offshore platform.

Construction is to begin at the end of August at OilFab's Pulau Indah fabrication yard and is expected to be completed in April. The Chermingat-A platform will be operated by Newfield in partnership with Petronas Carigali Sdn. Bhd. of Malaysia, which has 40% interest.

OilFab's fabrication center is on a 56-acre site near Westport – Pulau Indah. A newcomer to the offshore construction industry in Malaysia, OilFab received RM100 million in July from OilCorp Berhad for improvement and expansion of the fabrication yard, as well as working capital.

The Newfield Exploration Co. subsidiary signed a production-sharing contract last year for the PM 323 area off Malaysia (OGJ, June 20, 2005, Newsletter). The block covers 335,000 acres in water averaging 200 ft in the Malay basin 185 miles off Kemaman, Terengganu. Chermingat oil field is one of seven discoveries on the block.
