Colombia has awarded BP Exploration Co. Ltd. a 21,300 sq km tract off the country's northwest coast.

During the initial 2 year period BP will conduct a survey by airborne laser fluorosensor and a seabed coring program and shoot 2,000 line km of seismic surveys on the South Carigolan contract area. After that, BP has the option to take a license on all or part of the area and begin a drilling campaign.

Onshore, BP began testing its 2-A Cusiana appraisal of a 1988 discovery on the Santiago de las Atalayas block about 100 miles northeast of Bogota in the foothills of the Llanos Plain.

Information on the size of the discovery will not be released until the current 3 month test program is complete.

BP, which operates on behalf of itself and units of Total Cie. Francaise des Petroles and Triton Energy, also spudded a second appraisal, 1-A Buenos Aires, about 2-1/2 miles south of 2-A Cusiana. BP plans further appraisal drilling.
