Origin Energy Ltd. and joint venture partner Falcon Oil & Gas Ltd. are advancing the Stage 3 work program of the Beetaloo subbasin onshore Northern Territory, Australia.

The work program includes:

  • Acquisition of 40 sq km of 3D seismic data on the Amungee NW-1H well lease;
  • Drilling two 2,000+ m horizontal wells from the Amungee NW-1H pad targeting the Amungee Member (Middle Velkerri) shale;
  • Fracture stimulation of both wells;
  • Extended production testing of 90-180 days on each well; follow-up core and log analysis and the 2021 Velkerri 76 well results;
  • Further evaluation of last year’s Kyalla 117 N2-1H well to better understand issues encountered during testing.

The 3D seismic work will be used to plan drilling of this year’s wells and any future horizontal wells in the area and to optimize horizontal well trajectories.

The two new wells will establish the operational and cost efficiencies by drilling more than one well from the same pad and demonstrate the scalability of the Amungee NW-1H results over longer laterals, the company said.

Last year’s results at Amungee NW-1H suggested a normalized gas flow rate equivalent to about 5,000 Mscfd per 1,000 m of horizontal—a potentially commercial flow rate.

Falcon remains 75% carried through the 2022 program. The balance will be funded from existing resources.

Success in the 2022 work could lead to a pilot development program in 2023.
