Karoon Energy Ltd., Melbourne, has plugged Marina-1 wildcat in the Tumbes basin offshore Peru after finding only minor gas shows in the primary target (OGJ Online, Jan. 8, 2020).

The well, in Block Z-38, was drilled to a total depth of 3,021 m. Mudlogging and LWD logging results from the primary targets in the Tumbes formation indicated that the well encountered thin water-bearing sands. There was no oil and only minor gas.

Karoon is operator with 40% interest. Partners are Tullow Oil Plc with 35% and Pitkin Petroleum with 25%.

Karoon said data about the geological setting for the region had been gleaned and several potential reservoir sequences were found. The presence of water showed they were not prospective at the Marina location.

No further drilling is planned for Block Z-38 during this campaign. Instead Karoon plans to focus its efforts on completing its $655 million acquisition of 100% of producing Bauna oil field in the Santos basin offshore Brazil which is currently producing 20,000 b/d of oil.

The company also will continue its work in other prospects in the basin, including its Kangaroo, Echidna, and Emu discoveries.
