Apache Corp. has set a new target depth of 6,900 m for its first exploratory well in Block 58 offshore Suriname to evaluate a third play type in the Cretaceous.

Maka Central - 1, which lies about 7 miles from the Suriname-Guyana maritime border, was designed to test multiple targets. Drilling began in late September with an expected drill time of 30-60 days. Upon reaching a depth of 6,200 m, the company elected to conduct tests in two distinct Upper Cretaceous play types. Following the completion of the tests, Apache will set casing, make equipment modifications to the rig, and resume drilling in mid-December.

Following the drilling operations, further testing and evaluation will be conducted as appropriate.

Apache has exercised its option to drill two additional wells in the block with the Noble Sam Croft drillship.
