HOUSTON, Sept. 21 – Maurel & Prom, Paris, said a second well has confirmed that a heavy oil discovery on the Sabanero permit in Colombia’s Llanos basin could have an areal extent of 40 sq km with an average 30 ft of net pay.
The SAB-SE-1 well went to a total depth of 3,241 ft and found 27 ft of net pay with 12° gravity oil in the Carbonera C7 formation. The company perforated 15 ft of pay and gauged a flow of 500 b/d of oil. The first well had produced 140 bbl of oil before water breakthrough.
The exploitation conditions and quality of oil look to be similar to those at Rubiales field 30 miles southwest.
Maurel & Prom plans to drill a third exploratory well on the existing license. After it obtains environmental authorization, it will drill two more exploratory wells, one on top of the structure.
