HOUSTON, Aug. 31 – Phoenix Exploration LP, Houston, is drilling a projected 18,800-ft exploratory well on the Marathon prospect in Atchafalaya Bay in South Louisiana.

The 1 State Lease 20221 well, permitted before the Macondo incident in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, spudded Aug. 8 in 8 ft of water on a fault block separate from Phoenix’s previous Potomac discovery. Potomac is expected to begin production in September 2010 at a rate of 25 MMcfd of gas through facilities capable of handling 100 MMcfd.

Petsec Energy Ltd., Sydney, has a 10% working interest in the Marathon prospect, which has a resource potential of 20-78 bcf of gas. Drilling time is estimated at 75 days.
