HOUSTON, July 22
– Ireland awarded Serica Energy PLC a frontier license covering 993 sq km in the underexplored Rockall trough off the west coast.

The FEL1/09 license covers blocks 5/17, 5/18, 5/22, 5/23, 5/27, and 5/28. The initial 4-year phase requires geological, geophysical, and environmental studies, shooting 400 line-km of 2D seismic, and reprocessing 400 sq km of existing 3D data.

Permo-Triassic sandstones are the main targets and are expected at 4,000 m below sea level at the Muckish prospect in 1,450 m of water, where a well would cost $50-60 million. Technical success probability is estimated at 20%, and Serica, operator with 100% interest, would seek a partner.
