Challenger Energy finds more hydrocarbons in Saffron-2
Challenger Energy Group PLC encountered hydrocarbons in the most recently drilled section of the Saffron-2 appraisal well as part of the Saffron Project on Trinidad’s southwest peninsula.
The well, a twin to Saffron-1 drilled from the same pad, is primarily targeting Middle and Lower Cruse reservoirs. It reached a total depth of 4,126 ft with an intermediate casing string added to at 4,118 ft to preserve and bank the lower Middle Cruse and upper reservoir units of the main Lower Cruse target horizon, maximizing capacity for production testing.
On June 18 the well reached 2,804 ft TD, with about 165 ft of oil-bearing sands logged in non-primary reservoir targets. Initial petrophysical interpretation of logs to 3,530 ft identified a further 42 ft of net pay in the lower Middle Cruse, increasing total of oil-bearing sands thus far identified in the Upper Cruse and Middle Cruse to over 200 ft.
Drilling is continuing towards target depth of 4,557 ft, at which both Lower Cruse sections—the primary reservoirs of interest—will be logged. After reaching TD, the well will be production tested. The inclusion of an intermediate casing string has extended the schedule for completion of drilling and logging by about 7 days to June 30, with production testing remaining on track for mid-July.
Production of 200-300 b/d based on Saffron-1 is expected.
Challenger holds 100% operating interest in the well and the broader Saffron project.
