INPEX advances Bonaparte CCS project with Australian government declaration

The project offshore Darwin aims to store 10 million tpy of CO2 with first injection targeted in the early 2030s.

Key Highlights

  • The project received a declaration of an identified GHG storage formation, confirming its technical viability.
  • Pre-Front-End Engineering and Design began in April 2025, with CO2 injection targeted for the early 2030s.
  • The storage capacity is planned to be 10 million tons per year.

INPEX Corp. subsidiary INPEX Browse E&P Pty Ltd. has received an Australian government declaration of an identified greenhouse gas (GHG) storage formation for the Bonaparte carbon capture and storage (CCS) project, confirming the technical viability of a proposed CO2 storage site within greenhouse gas assessment permit G-7-AP, about 260 km offshore Darwin in Australia's Northern Territory.

The Bonaparte CCS joint venture will continue technical, environmental, regulatory, and commercial activities as it progresses the project toward development.

Bonaparte was the first project to receive major project status from the Australian government in 2025.

Pre-front-end engineering and design began in April 2025 with first carbon dioxide (CO2) injection targeted for the early 2030s subject to regulatory approvals and commercial agreements.

The Bonaparte CCS project is designed to provide up to 10 million tonnes/year of CO2 storage capacity and has the potential to reduce emissions from Ichthys LNG by about 40%.

The Ichthys joint venture is expected to be the Bonaparte CCS Project’s anchor customer.

INPEX Browse E&P is operator of the Bonaparte CCS joint venture with 53% interest. Partners are TotalEnergies CCS Australia Pty Ltd. (26%) and Woodside Energy Ltd. (21%).
