Energean PLC subsidiary EnEarth has let a contract to Vallourec SA to supply premium tubular solutions for the first phase of the Prinos carbon dioxide (CO₂) carbon storage (CCS) project offshore Kavala in northern Greece.

Under the Sept.18 contract, Vallourec will provide an overall package of about 3,000 tonnes total of premium tubular solutions designed to ensure long-term well integrity, a critical requirement for the safe and permanent storage of CO₂, the service provider said in a release.

Vallourec’s scope of delivery specifically includes seamless carbon steel and corrosion-resistant alloy (CRA) casing pipes equipped with proprietary VAM premium connections, as well as its proprietary CLEANWELL dope-free solution for enhancing equipment operational efficiency while reducing environmental impact.

While Vallourec did not disclose regarding the value and estimated timeline for delivery under the contract, the Prinos CO₂ project is scheduled for final investment decision and start of drilling in 2027 for targeted startup of full operations before 2030, according to EnEarth.

Designated as one of Europe’s most advanced carbon storage projects, Prinos CO2 aims to convert a depleted oil reservoir into a permanent CO₂-storage site, with a targeted injection capacity of up to 2.8 million tonnes/year (tpy) and a total—proved plus probable—storage capacity of 51.5 million tonnes.

As Greece’s only oil and-gas producing area, Prinos basin includes Prinos oil field and South-Kavala gas field and has been identified as a location to host a CO₂ storage plant with potential capacity to store close to 30% of Greece’s current industrial CO₂ emissions for at least 15 years, EnEarth said.

Recognized by the European Union as a Project of Common Interest and supported by European and Greek funding programs, Prinos CO₂, once operable, is anticipated to contribute to the decarbonization of industrial activities in Greece and across the wider Eastern Mediterranean region.
