TotalEnergies SE signed an agreement with CapeOmega Carbon Storage AS to acquire 40% participating interest in the Luna carbon capture and storage project in Norwegian North Sea exploration license ExL004, 120 km offshore Bergen in 200 m of water.
ExL004 is operated by Wintershall DEA Norge AS with 60% participating interest and covers an area of 453 sq km. It is adjacent to the license where the Northern Lights CO2 storage project (TotalEnergies, 33%) is under development.
Luna is estimated to hold a CO2 storage injection capacity of up to 5 million tonnes/year. Partners plan to build a CO2 hub in Wilhelmshaven on the German North Sea coast to enable collection and transport of CO2 (OGJ Online, Oct. 5, 2022). Phase one is due to start in 2024.
