Wintershall Dea has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Co. (EGAS) to explore carbon capture and storage (CCS) and hydrogen opportunities, the company said in a release July 21.

For 2 years, the companies will jointly work to identify potentially suitable fields for CCS in operated assets in Egypt and will explore possibilities to produce natural gas-based low-carbon hydrogen, Wintershall said.

Egypt has recently set out a new climate change strategy to drive forward its energy transition. The new strategy includes the expansion of the country’s hydrogen production, an increased effort for emission reduction, and the exploration of possibilities for CCS.

Wintershall DEA holds 17.25% of the offshore West Nile Delta gas concession and operates the onshore Nile Delta Disouq gas concession held by Suez Oil Co. Exploration continues at East Damanhour, onshore Nile Delta.
