Buckeye Partners LP has agreed to acquire Bear Head Energy Inc., owners of a clean energy development project in an industrial complex in Point Tupper, NS. Bear Head, most recently being developed as a 12-million tonne/year LNG plant, is fully permitted and approved for construction, according to Buckeye.
“It is our intention to develop a large-scale energy production, distribution, and export hub that will offer our customers lower-carbon energy solutions, including LNG or other green fuels,” said Todd J. Russo, Buckeye chief executive officer.
The site is on 251 acres of land with a 68-acre water lot on the northeast bank of the Strait of Canso. It has access to one of the northern-most, year-round ice-free ports, providing ready access to both the US East Coast and Europe.
Anadarko Petroleum Corp. began construction of a 1-bcfd LNG import terminal at the Bear Head site in 2004, with the project slated for late-2007 completion (OGJ Online, Nov. 2, 2004). Bear Head LNG was approved as an export liquefaction project by the government of Nova Scotia in 2015, at which point it was expected to enter service in 2019. Also in 2015, the US Department of Energy approved the import and reexport of Canadian-sourced natural gas for liquefaction at Bear Head.
