Santos Ltd. has entered the front-end engineering and design stage of its proposed carbon capture storage (CCS) project at Bayu-Undan field in the Timor Sea.

Santos says the project could potentially store up to 10 million tonnes of CO2/year, which is equivalent to about 1.5% of Australia’s carbon emissions each year.

FEED work will include engineering and design for additional CO2 processing capacity at Darwin LNG plus repurposing of the Bayu-Undan offshore infrastructure to switch to carbon sequestration once gas production from the field ceases.

Santos is working with the East Timor regulator ANPM to compile the necessary agreements and regulatory framework required for the CCS project. Agreements will also be required from the governments of both East Timor and Australia.

A final investment decision on Bayu-Undan CCS is scheduled for 2023.

Santos is operator of Bayu-Undan and Darwin LNG with 43.4% interest. Partners are SK E&S (25%), INPEX (11.4%), ENI (11%), JERA (6.1%), and Tokyo Gas (3.1%).
