MERIDIAN LOGS HEFTY CHALK TEST

June 11, 1990
Meridian Oil Inc., Houston, has reported a significant oil and gas flow at a Cretaceous Austin chalk wildcat in South Central Texas. The 1H E.E. Smith discovery in Gonzales County flowed at a rate of 12,254 b/d of oil, 3,032 b/d of water, and 4.9 MMcfd of gas based on a 4 hr test through two 2 1/16 in. chokes with 300 psi flowing tubing pressure at 11,368 ft measured depth. Austin chalk displacement was about 2,900 ft. Produced water, analyzed as drilling and completion fluids, was declining

Produced water, analyzed as drilling and completion fluids, was declining during the test of the well, in which Meridian owns a 100% interest.

Although early test results are good, Meridian said, the Austin chalk trend has a history of sharp production declines in some areas.

Officials of the Texas Railroad Commission observed the tests.

Meridian, a unit of Burlington Resources Inc., has about 20,000 acres under lease in the well's area. It has more than 100,000 net acres leased in Wilson, Karnes, and Gonzales counties.
