North American drilling activity declined for the week ended Sept. 4 with 792 rotary rigs working in the US and Canada, Baker Hughes officials reported Friday.

An across-the-board decline in working rigs in Canada drove the decline. There were 204 rigs working in Canada this week, a 7-unit decline from last week. Of those, 140 were drilling for oil, 4 fewer than a week ago. Rigs drilling for gas totaled 62 for the week, 1 fewer than the previous week. The unclassified rig count in Canada decreased by 2 units to 2 working.

The US rig count is unchanged from the previous week at 588, and up 51 units from this time last year. The number of rigs drilling on land increased by a single unit to end the week at 577 rigs working. There were 3 rigs drilling in inland waters, unchanged from last week. One fewer rig was drilling offshore, reducing the total number of rigs working to 8.

Two fewer rigs were drilling for gas in the US this week, bringing the weekly total to 130. There were 449 units drilling for oil this week, up 2 from this time last year. The number of unclassified rigs drilling was unchanged from last week with 9 working rigs.

Louisiana and Pennsylvania each dropped a single unit this week, with respective counts of 35 and 15. Texas and Colorado each added a rig this week. Respective rig counts in the states landed at 283 and 13.
