North American weekly rig count rises
North American drilling activity posted an 8-rig increase for the week ended June 5, with a total 732 rigs running. There were 563 rigs working in the US and another 169 in Canada, Baker Hughes officials reported Friday.
Oil drilling drove the gain in Canada, with 115 rigs running this week, 6 more than the previous week. One additional rig was gas-directed this week for a total of 54 working. Canada’s total rig count is up 7 rigs from last week and up 55 from this time in 2025.
The rig count for the US is up 1 unit from the previous week and up 4 from a year ago. The number of rigs drilling on land increased by 8 units to end the week at 549 rigs working. There were 4 rigs drilling in inland waters, up 1 unit from last week. Ten rigs were drilling offshore, down 8 units from last week.
In the US, 2 additional oil-directed rigs helped offset the 1-rig loss in gas-directed rigs this week. There were 431 units drilling for oil this week and 124 rigs drilling for gas.
Texas gained 4 rigs to end the week with 260 units working. New Mexico’s rig count was down 2 units this week to 96. Oklahoma dropped a single unit to end the week with 43 working rigs.
