Canada posts double-digit rig count increase
Increased oil drilling in Canada and the US led to a 28-rig increase in the overall North America rig count, according to Baker Hughes data. There were 724 rigs working in North America the week ended May 29.
Canada's rig count increased by 24 units to 162 this week. The count is 50 units higher than this time last year. This week, there were 22 more rigs drilling for oil in Canada than last week, bringing the count to 109. Five additional rigs were gas-directed for a total of 53.
In the US, 4 additional rigs were working compared with last week for a total of 562. The count is down 1 unit from this time last year.
US oil-directed rigs increased by 4 units to reach 429 drilling this week. The count is down 22 from this time in 2025. The number of gas-directed rigs was unchanged at 125. A year ago, 109 units were drilling for gas in the US.
The number of rigs drilling on US land increased by 5 from last week to 541. Drilling in inland waters was unchanged with 3 rigs running. The offshore rig count declined by 1 to 18.
Of the major and gas producing states, New Mexico saw the largest increase in number of working rigs. With a 5-unit gain, the rig count in the state stood at 98 for the week. Texas added a single unit to reach 256 working rigs this week. Oklahoma and Louisiana each dropped a rig to reach counts of 44 and 38 rigs running, respectively.
