North America rig count up 2 units from last week

Drilling activity across North America saw a modest increase this week, with total rigs reaching 672, driven by slight gains in both the US and Canada.

Total drilling activity in North America increased slightly the week ended May 8, with 672 rotary rigs working, reported Baker Hughes. The count is down 20 from the same time last year but up 2 from last week.

The number of rigs working in the US increased by 1 to 548. The count is down 30 units from the same period in 2025. There were 527 rigs onshore, 2 more than were drilling last week. The number of rigs working in inland waters remained unchanged at 3, while the count for rigs working offshore decreased by a single unit to hit 18 rigs working for the week. In total, 410 rigs in the US were oil-directed, a 2-unit increase from last week. There were 129 rigs drilling for gas in the US, 1 unit fewer than last week.

Texas gained 2 rigs this week to reach 240. Oklahoma’s rig count increased by a single unit to 44. Louisiana dropped a rig to end the weed with 42 rigs working.

Canada gained 1 unit this week for a total of 124. The count is down 20 units from the same time a year ago. In Canada, 77 rigs were oil-directed, 3 more than last week. The gas-directed rig count decreased by 2 units.
