Canada drops 7 units, US rig count up 3

The rig count in Canada is down 7 units to 123 rigs working for the week ended May 1, according to Baker Hughes data. The weekly total is up 3 units from the 120 rigs working this time a year ago. With 74 oil-directed rigs running, there were 4 fewer than last week, but unchanged from the year-ago period. Gas-directed rigs in Canada fell by 3 to 49 units working.

In the US, a 3-rig increase brought the rig count to 547 rigs working for the week. That number is down 37 units from the 584 rigs running in the US this time last year.

US oil-directed rigs increased by 1 unit to 408. That total is down 64 units from this time in 2025. Gas-directed rigs increased by 1 unit to 130. A year ago, 108 rigs were drilling for gas in the US.

The number of rigs drilling on land in the US was down 6 to 525, which is 42 fewer than this time last year. Horizontal rigs decreased by 4 units to 480. Vertical rigs were unchanged at 12. The number of rigs drilling directionally increased by 5 to 50. Unclassified rigs were up 1 to 9.

Texas saw the largest increase in rigs. With a 4-unit increase, the count stands at 238 for the week. Louisiana added 2 rigs to end the week with 44. Alaska’s rig count increased by 1 unit to end the week with 12 rigs working.

New Mexico dropped 3 rigs to end the week with 95. Wyoming’s rig count decreased by 1 unit to 16.

Offshore units increased by 8 rigs to end the week with 19 rigs working.
