US, Canada rig counts little changed

US rig counts saw slight shifts, including a small increase in total rigs and gas-directed rigs, while Canadian rig activity remained steady.

There was little movement in rig counts in the US and Canada the week ended Apr. 24, according to Baker Hughes.

In the US, 544 rigs were working, up 1 unit from the prior week. The count is 43 units fewer than the 587 rigs working this time a year ago.

Rigs drilling on land in the US totaled 531, up 2 from last week. Offshore units were down 1 to 11. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was unchanged at 2.

There were 10 rigs drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, down 1 from last week.

In the US, there were 407 rigs drilling for oil this week, down 3 from last week and down 68 from the same time last year.

The gas-directed rig count in the US was up 4 units to 129. That count is 22 more than the same period in 2025.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Texas saw the largest increase in rigs. With 234 rigs running, the count is 2 more than this time last week. Oklahoma gained 1 rig to end the week with 43.

New Mexico’s rig count fell by 2 this week to 98.

In Canada, 130 rigs were working this week, unchanged from last week, but up 2 from the year prior. Of those, 78 were drilling for oil, up one from last week. There were 52 gas-directed rigs working in Canada this week, down 1 from the week prior, but up 5 from this time in 2025.
