Canada drops 5 rigs, US count down 2
The rig count in Canada is down 5 units to 130 rigs working for the week ended Apr. 17, according to Baker Hughes data. The weekly total is down 4 units from the 134 rigs working this time a year ago. The decline is attributable to oil-directed rigs, which decreased by 6 to reach a count of 77. Gas-directed rigs in Canada increased by 1 to 53 units working.
In the US, a 2-rig decrease brought the rig count to 543 for the week. The count is down 42 units from the 585 rigs running in the US this time last year.
US oil-directed rigs decreased by 1 unit to 410. That total is down 63 from this time in 2025. Gas-directed rigs decreased by 2 units to 125. A year ago, 106 units were drilling for gas in the US.
The number of rigs drilling on land in the US was down 1 unit to 529, which is 40 fewer than this time last year. Horizontal rigs decreased by 1 unit to 482. Vertical rigs were unchanged at 12. The number of rigs drilling directionally was down 4 units to 46. Unclassified rigs were up 1 to 8 rigs working this week.
The rig counts in most of the largest US oil and gas producing states were unchanged this week. New Mexico added a rig to end the week with 100 while Louisiana dropped a rig to end the week with 42 rigs running.
Offshore units decreased by 2 to end the week with 12 rigs working. Eleven units were working in the Gulf of Mexico, down 2 from last week.
