Canada drops 11 units, US rig count up 5
The rig count in Canada is down 11 units to 142 working for the week ended Apr. 2, according to Baker Hughes data. The count was released Thursday, a day earlier than usual, due to the Good Friday holiday on Apr. 3, 2026.
In Canada, 88 units were oil-directed this week, down 7 from last week. There were 4 fewer gas-directed rigs this week, for a total of 54.
In the US, 548 rigs were working, up 5 units from the previous week, but down 42 from the same period in 2025.
There were 3 additional gas-directed rigs working in the US this week, bringing the week’s count to 130. Two additional rigs were drilling for oil, for a total of 411 for the week.
The number of rigs drilling on land in the US was up 6 units to 536, which is 37 fewer than this time last year. Horizontal rigs increased by 3 units to 485. Vertical rigs were up 4 to 16. The number of rigs drilling directionally was down 2 to 45. Unclassified rigs were unchanged at 7.
Texas saw the largest increase in rigs. With a 2-unit increase, the count stands at 233 for the week. Four states added a single unit to their counts this week. New Mexico’s count stands at 103, while Louisiana’s count increased to 40, Wyoming to 16, and Utah to 14.
Offshore units were unchanged at 11.
