Canada rig count surges with 96-unit gain
Rotary rig activity in Canada increased by 96 rigs this week, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is still down 19 units from the number of active rigs in Canada during the same period last year.
The number of rigs drilling in Canada totaled 197 for the week ended Jan. 9. Of the rigs added, 79 were drilling for oil. The oil-directed rig count by week's end was 128. Gas-directed rigs increased by 17 for a total of 69.
In the US, the rig count dipped with 2 fewer rigs drilling for the week with a total of 544.
Of those, 525 were drilling on land, down 2 from last week. The number of rigs drilling offshore and in inland waters were unchanged at 16 and 3, respectively.
In the US, 409 rigs were drilling for oil, down 3 from the week prior and down 71 from the same period in 2025. The number of gas-directed rigs in the US dipped by a single unit to end the week with 124. The count is up 24 units from this time last year.
Onshore gains of 4 rigs in Utah and 1 in Colorado were offset by declines of 3 in Louisiana, and 1 each in New Mexico, North Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming.
