Oil rigs drive small increase in Canada rig count
The drilling rig count in Canada increased during the week ended Aug. 15, led by a gain in oil-directed rigs.
Baker Hughes’ overall tally of active drilling rigs in Canada increased 3 units to 183. The count was down by 34 units compared with the year-ago level.
Oil-directed rigs increased by 4 this week to 126. That number is down 25 from the 151 oil-directed rigs drilling in Canada this time last year.
Gas-directed rigs were unchanged at 57. There are 9 fewer active gas-directed rigs than this time last year.
The total US drilling rig count was unchanged from last week with 539 rigs working. That number is down 47 from this time last year. There were 412 oil-directed rigs working in the US this week, up one from last week but down 71 from the same period in 2024. There were 112 rigs drilling for gas this week, down 1 from this time last year.
The number of rigs drilling on land in the US is unchanged from last week with 524 active rigs. That number is down 43 from the same period a year ago.
The US offshore count also was left unchanged at 13.
Louisiana gained 2 rigs to end the week with 36 rigs working, 2 fewer than this time last year.
Texas and Wyoming each dropped a rig, leaving respective counts of 242 and 13.
