Reconnaissance Energy Africa Ltd. (ReconAfrica) has spudded well 6-1, the second Kavango basin well in the Kalahari Desert in northeast Namibia.

Reconnaissance Energy Africa Ltd. (ReconAfrica) has spudded well 6-1, the second Kavango basin well in the Kalahari Desert in northeast Namibia.

The well is designed to evaluate the petroleum systems in an area of maximum thickness discovered in the first well (6-2) (OGJ Online, Apr. 16, 2021). These first two wells are within one of five major sub-basins of the larger, more laterally extensive, Permian aged deep Kavango basin.

The first string of casing is set and cemented. The Jarvie-1 1000 HP rig is drilling ahead to a target depth of 3,800 m (12,500 ft). The company will take whole core and sidewall core, and will obtain a full logging suite of all zones of interest (conventional targets and source rocks).

As with 6-2, a comprehensive state of the art logging program over both sections will be provided by Schlumberger. In addition, a vertical seismic profile will be run to enable the most accurate tie-in possible of well data to the 2D seismic program scheduled to commence in June, the company said.

ReconAfrica holds a 90% working interest in petroleum licenses in northeast Namibia comprising 6.3 million contiguous acres.
