Empyrean Energy PLC advanced plans to drill and test the Jade prospect on Block 29/11 offshore China with selection of a four-string (casing) design as recommended by AGR.

AGR, contracted for well planning and engineering in April, completed a review of offset wells in the vicinity, which includes four CNOOC wells, and recommended the four-string design over a three-string design to reduce exposure to potential unplanned events and associated costs (OGJ Online, Apr. 28, 2021). AGR also provided comprehensive design recommendations for drilling fluids, cement, and well abandonment which is required for exploration and appraisal wells even in the success case.

Following a successful test, an appraisal well would be drilled, and core taken, to assist with development planning. Following development approval, subsequent wells would be designed for production.

Tom Kelly, chief executive officer, said the next step is to use the report and recommendations to identify and negotiate a suitable drilling rig.

Jade has a potential 225 million bbl oil in place (STOIIP) with a P10 upside case of 395 million bbl.
