Karoon Energy Ltd. has let a contract to Maersk Drilling for use of the Maersk Developer drilling rig for intervention on four wells at Baúna field (Concession BM‐S‐40) in the Santos basin offshore Brazil.

The contract—valued at $34 million including modifications and a mobilization fee—is expected to commence in first-half 2022 with a firm duration of 110 days and contains options to add up to 150 days of drilling work at Patola and Neon fields.

The column-stabilized, dynamically positioned semi-submersible rig can operate in water depths up to 10,000 ft. It is currently operating offshore Suriname. The contract marks the first time a Maresk rig will operate offshore Brazil.

Bauna field comprises two producing oil reservoirs with a total 2P reserves of 46.8 million bbl produced via a leased floating production, storage, and offtake vessel (Cidade de Itajai). There is also a 2C contingent resource of 15.6 million bbl in the undeveloped Patola discovery.

Karoon Energy has 100% operated interest in Baúna after acquisition from Petrobras (OGJ Online, Jul. 27, 2020).
