Baker Hughes: Canada gains 2 oil rigs for the week

Canada has added 2 rigs for the week ended Oct. 11, according to Baker Hughes data. The increase puts the total number of rigs running at 146, still 49 fewer than the 195 units drilling this week a year ago.

Gas-directed rigs in Canada increased by 5 to a total of 44, offsetting the 3-unit oil rig decline to 102 for the week.

The US drilling rig count gained a single unit to 856 rigs working during the week. There were 1,063 rigs running this week a year ago.

The sole rig addition in the US was land-based, bringing that total to 831. Rigs drilling in inland waters were unchanged at 1 unit. Rigs drilling offshore also were unchanged from last week at 24 units.

There was a 2-unit increase in oil rigs to 712 and a 1-unit loss in gas rigs to 143.

Horizontal drilling rigs were up 1 unit to 750. Directional drilling rigs also increased 1 unit to reach 55.

Major states, basins

New Mexico saw the largest increase of the major oil and gas-producing states, adding 6 more units to reach a total of 420. West Virginia added 3 rigs to hit 17 units for the week. Louisiana added 2 rigs week-over-week to reach 57.

Six states were unchanged week-over-week, namely North Dakota, 54; Wyoming, 33; California, 14; Colorado 24; Utah, 4; and Kansas, 0.

Pennsylvania saw 4 fewer units working this week. The state’s count ended the week at 32 rigs.

Four states were down a single unit this week, namely New Mexico, 112; Oklahoma, 62; Ohio, 10; and Alaska, 8.
