The US drilling rig count decreased 3 units to reach 563 rigs working for the week ended May 30, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is down 37 units from the 600 rigs working this time a year ago.
The number of rigs drilling on land fell by 5 week-over-week with a total of 548 units. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was unchanged at 2 for the week. The number of rigs drilling offshore increased by 2 to 13.
US oil-directed rigs decreased by 4 from last week to reach 461 units. This time a year ago, 496 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas increased by 1 unit to reach 99 rigs running, 1 fewer than this time a year ago.
Of the major oil and gas-producing states, four saw rig counts drop. New Mexico, Oklahoma, Ohio, and West Virginia each dropped a single unit to reach respective counts of 91, 52, 11, and 7.
Pennsylvania added a single unit to end the week with 18 rigs running.
Canada’s rig count decreased by 2 units this week. With 112 rigs working, the count is 16 fewer than the 128 units drilling this week a year ago. At 69 units, Canada’s oil-directed rig count is 2 units fewer than last week. The gas-directed rig count in Canada is unchanged at 43.
