Canada oil drilling pushes rig count higher

The total rig count in Canada is up 7 from last week and up 7 from the same period a year ago.

The rig count in Canada ended the week with 7 additional rigs running. For the week ended May 16, the rig count in Canada stood at 121, according to Baker Hughes data. There were 6 additional oil-directed rigs working in Canada last week and 1 additional gas-directed rig, bringing the week’s totals to 74 and 47, respectively.

The total rig count in Canada is up 7 from the 114 rigs working during the same period a year ago.

In the US, 2 fewer rigs were running for a total of 576. The count is down 28 from the 604 rigs running in the US during the same period in 2024.

US oil-directed rigs decreased by 1 unit to 473, down 24 from the same period last year. Gas-directed rigs also decreased by 1 to end the week at 100. A year ago, 103 units were drilling for gas.

The number of rigs drilling on land decreased by a single rig to 563. The number of rigs drilling horizontally was down 2 units to 520. The number of rigs drilling vertically was unchanged from last week at 15. 

Of the major oil and gas producing states, Wyoming and Ohio saw increases. Wyoming ended the week with 20 rigs working, up 1 from last week. Ohio also saw a 1-unit increase to end the week with 10 rigs running. 

Texas and New Mexico each dropped 2 rigs to end the week with respective counts of 271 and 94. 

The number of rigs drilling in the US Gulf of Mexico remained unchanged at 9. The number of rigs drilling offshore was unchanged at 11. The inland waters rig count is down 1 unit to 2 rigs working.
